The New Symposium
One-Year Online Residencies

WHAT SUSTAINED PARTICIPATION CAN AFFORD
The value of The New Symposium lies not in producing a standardized final outcome but in developing capacities that remain active beyond any single project:
– greater precision in articulating the premises and stakes of a practice;
– deeper understanding of its historical, material, and institutional conditions;
– methods tested against alternative interpretations, materials, and working conditions;
– firmer judgment about what to retain, revise, abandon, or pursue;
– greater capacity to offer, receive, and use rigorous critical attention;
– questions sufficiently exact to generate future works, collaborations, and research.
No completed project is required. Participants may enter with an unfinished artwork, score, performance, interpretation, rehearsal process, curatorial framework, institutional question, professional transition, or proposition whose terms remain unresolved. What matters is not the degree of completion, but whether the work or question can sustain inquiry.
Work in progress is not treated as a deficient version of a finished product. It creates a distinct condition of inquiry: decisions remain visible, alternatives remain available, and the future of a practice can still be negotiated.
