The New Symposium

THE METHODOLOGICAL CYCLE
Present → situate → examine → test → revise → return
A participant introduces a work, method, or question in enough detail for its operative premises to be examined. Materials are considered in relation to their histories, the technologies and institutions that shape them, and their conditions of production. Alternative interpretations are introduced, decisions are tested, and consequences are traced.
The same inquiry can return after the work has changed.
This recursive structure moves beyond episodic feedback by making change itself available for comparison. It enables participants to compare stated intentions with perceptible consequences, identify assumptions built into a method, and observe how decisions change under sustained scrutiny.
Critical disagreement becomes productive when it is informed, specific, and answerable to the materials and claims at hand. Critique therefore entails responsibility: to attend closely, articulate precisely, and offer responses that another practitioner can use, contest, or refuse.
